Baton Rouge's Only Pediatric Emergency Room
At Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital, we specialize in meeting the unique needs of children and families during medical emergencies.
Our award-winning emergency department is staffed entirely with physicians that specialize in caring for babies, children, teens and young adults, providing complete, coordinated care for your child in one location. We offer an excellent team of skilled pediatric physicians and a comprehensive range of specialists to provide your child with the highest level of care. We use all of the latest technology and specialized medical equipment, and can handle any emergency that arises.
In 2011, Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital Emergency Department earned the state's first Gold Bear Designation from Louisiana Emergency Services for Children and the Emergency Medical Services for Children's Governor's Council. The Gold Bear Designation recognizes Emergency Departments dedicated to excellent care of sick or injured infants and children.
In a given year, Our Lady of the Lake Pediatric Emergency Room treats more than 30,000 children. A team of more than sixty staff members, including eight pediatric physicians, three physician assistants and nurse practitioners, and a large crew of support staff, are available around the clock to meet your child's needs.
Your child is in good hands. Our team recognizes how stressful illness or injury can be – not only to your child, but also to your family. We provide Child Life Specialists to help guide you and your child through the entire duration of care at our hospital. Our Child Life Specialists—who are trained to help children understand their diagnosis, prepare them for procedures and talk to them in terms they can understand—are available 24-hours a day to answer any questions you might have.
Ensuring Your Child's Utmost Comfort
While in the Emergency Room waiting area at our hospital, your child may have access to medication to make him or her feel better while waiting to see a physician. You may discuss this option with your nurse upon arrival. The hospital also has a wide variety of toys and books available, including handheld electronic gaming systems and televisions.
Beyond the Pediatric Emergency Room
After receiving treatment in the emergency room, your child may be discharged to go home or, if needed, admitted to another area of the Children's Hospital.
- Our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is designed and staffed to care for the most critically ill children and to provide the region's most comprehensive pediatric services. The 14-bed unit serves patients from Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.
- Pediatric Unit: The pediatric unit is a 95-bed unit where children with both medical and surgical diagnoses are admitted and receive care. Services are provided for pediatric neurology, pediatric cardiology and hematology/oncology patients, including long-term acute care for chronic illnesses.
