In 2011, Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital Emergency Department earned the state's first Gold Bear Designation from Louisiana Emergency Services for Children and the Emergency Medical Services for Children's Governor's Council. The Gold Bear Designation recognizes Emergency Departments dedicated to excellent care of sick or injured infants and children. In a given year, Our Lady of the Lake Pediatric Emergency Room treats more than 30,000 children. 60 staff, including 8 pediatric physicians, 3 physician assistants and nurse practitioners, and a large cadre of support staff are available around the clock to meet your child's needs.

Your child is in good hands at Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital. We provide Child Life Specialists to help guide you and your child through the entire duration of your care at our hospital. Our Child Life Specialists-trained to help children understand their diagnosis, prepare them for procedures and talk to them in terms they can understand-are available 24 hours a day to answer any questions you might have.

Ensuring Your Child's Utmost Comfort

While in the Emergency Room waiting area at our hospital, your child may have access to medication to make him or her feel better while waiting to see a physician. You may discuss this option with the nurse you meet with upon arrival. The hospital also has a wide variety of toys and books available, including handheld electronic gaming systems, as well as televisions.

Beyond the Pediatric Emergency Room

After receiving treatment in the emergency room, your child may be discharged to go home or, if needed, admitted to another area of the Children's Hospital.

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit: Our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is designed and staffed to care for the most critically ill children and to provide the region's most comprehensive pediatric services. The 14-bed unit now serves patients from all over the state.

Pediatric Unit: The pediatric unit is a 95-bed unit where children with both medical and surgical diagnoses are admitted and cared for. Services are provided for pediatric neurology, pediatric cardiology, and hematology/ oncology patients, including long-term acute care for chronic illnesses.

Patient and Family Testimonials

To - Dr. Boudreaux - Pediatric Emergency Dept.

My little boy had a chin laceration and came to the ER here and Dr. Boudreaux was wonderful with him. He spoke to my son about all the toys he knew that he liked and really got down on his level. I believe that due to his ability to communicate, my little boy remained calm. Thanks.

We were watching my son's baseball game, when he was hit in the knee by a line drive. Wanda was there at the game. She asked if I would like for her to look at him and explained where she worked. After examining his knee, she wrapped it up, added ice and recommended the ER. Much thanks to Wanda for her caring and help!
